Computer Graphics/Video Cards All of the images you see on your screen are produced by the video card in your computer. The card contains the graphics processing unit, or GPU, which is a parallel processor designed for producing images. Anything with a screen needs some kind of graphics processor, whether it be a desktop, laptop, or even mobile phone.

What's the difference between integrated and dedicated cards? An integrated card is built directly into the computer itself; either in the motherboard or the CPU.

This allows the GPU to share resources with the rest of the computer. An integrated card is smaller, and consumes less power.

A dedicated graphics card contains an independent GPU that mostly relies on its own resources. A dedicated graphics card has its own memory and power supply so it can be more powerful than integrated graphics. High-quality graphics and video editing are both computation and memory intensive. Modern gaming systems or video editing software can easily require gigabytes of dedicated video RAM.

An integrated card is sufficient for most basic tasks such as web-browsing, but uses like playing cutting edge games and mining cryptocurrency require more processing power. What can I use graphics cards for? In addition to gaming and video editing, graphics cards have also become very popular for bitcoin mining. It's all about the parallel architecture. All forms of cryptocurrency mining, such as bitcoin mining, require a lot of similar calculations.

More powerful graphics cards can do these calculations in parallel, where your CPU would do them sequentially. This makes graphics cards much better suited to cryptocurrency mining than any CPU. Can I use multiple graphics cards at the same time? Yes, depending on the card; this technology is known as SLI in NVIDIA cards and Crossfire in AMD cards. Running multiple cards simultaneously provides more performance, but you need a compatible motherboard as well as the appropriate video cards. You also need sufficient power and cooling for all your cards.

Check with the manufacturer to ensure that your cards are compatible.

Hello everyone =) I've recently installed Linux on an old iMac from 2010 that's equiped with an ATI HD 4670/RV730. As soon as I booted from liveUSB I got the screen split into 4.

I learned the nomodeset trick and managed to install it no problem. I thought the problem was with the live USB but it's not. I tried using LM 17.3, same thing.

So I have no problem when using nomodeset but I don't get HW acceleration, big issue. Using radeon.modeset=0 gets me the same results as nomodeset which makes me believe it's linked to the radeon OS driver, or Xorg, but I have to expertise there so I need you guys' help. What could it be? GFX card firmware different? Here's infos in case. You have an AMD 4670/RV730 video card.

Unfortunately that's sort of a legacy card. There's no closed binary driver available for any AMD card pre the 5xxx series. So the open source driver (radeon) is all you get. AMD is in the process of rewriting their entire Linux graphics stack, and hopefully their support for older cards improves. There are newer AMD drivers (amdgpu) but they're only for quite new cards. You'll find many things on the web saying that if you run AMD video you're better off with 17.3 (ubuntu 14.04 based).

This IS true for 5xxx series cards or newer. For older cards I don't see much difference. Nomodeset isn't a trick. It just turns off kernel modesetting, and has nothing to do with brightness or colour. Ii don't know about colour (you didn't specify what the issue was).

But for brightness you can try a different kernel parameter. First you open the terminal and modify the grub file. I use leafpad as a simple editor, substitute whatever yours is in this: gksudo leafpad /etc/default/grub Find the line that says.

GRUBCMDLINELINUXDEFAULT='quiet splash'. Though there may be other parameters besides quiet splash.

Add 'acpibacklight=vendor' to that line so it reads. GRUBCMDLINELINUXDEFAULT='quiet splash acpibacklight=vendor'.

Again, there may be other parameters there. Save the file. Then (VERY IMPORTANT) in the terminal do this. Sudo update-grub. To make the change permanent.
